Tulle Overlays Wedding Dresses – 2011 Top Trend

May 12th, 2010 by Angela

Designers are coming out with their Spring 2011 collections, and I’ve been noticing certain trends in this season’s wedding dresses. One of my favorites is their use of tulle overlays. Placing a soft layer of tulle over a different fabric creates a softer look and tones down the luster of high-gloss satin and silk. Lots of designers used this fabric treatment this season.

Best Dressed Stars at the 2010 Oscars

March 28th, 2010 by Angela

cameron diaz
With her signature tan skin and a new Veronica Lake-inspired ‘do, presenter Cameron Diaz is absolutely radiant in this gold sparkly Oscar de la Renta creation. Now if they’d just give out Oscars for fashion sense alone, she’d be all set.

SIDNEY HICKS and MO NIQUE
Best Supporting Actress Mo’Nique is stunning in a bright cobalt blue Tadashi gown. Draped and cinched in all the right places, the most special touch is the gardenia in her hair in honor of Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American actress to win an Oscar.

MERYL STREEP
Is Meryl Streep a ‘Project Runway’ fan? The much-praised ‘Julia & Julia’ star is a show-stopper in this bright white creation, but the biggest surprise is that the look is by over-the-top alum of the fashion designer series, Chris March. Bravo, indeed!

RYAN REYNOLDS
Since he was tapped to play the lead in ‘The Green Lantern,’ funny guy Ryan Reynolds has been hitting the gym — and it shows. His classic Tom Ford ensemble is complete with a bowtie. The only thing that could make this look hotter is wife Scarlett Johansson on his arm.

Penelope-Cruz-Oscar-Dress
Penelope Cruz might be nominated for her role in ‘Nine,’ but she looks like a perfect 10 on the Oscars red carpet in a crimson Donna Karan haute couture gown. Pleated and draped with an asymmetrical strapless neckline, this is truly a red carpet winner.

Carey Mulligan
Carey Mulligan is one of the evening’s youngest nominees, and we applaud her for dressing her age. Wearing an edgy strapless Prada gown, with intricate embellishments and an asymmetrical hemline to show off her sky-high satin heels, we love the look, we love the hair, we love her.

ELIZABETH BANKS
Elizabeth Banks is radiant, even in a storm-colored gown on a rainy day. The intricate lines of her Versace number show off her curves, while the playful tiara-inspired crystal headband reminds us why we love the funny lady: that sunny personality.

PETER SARSGAARD, MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL
Jake Gyllenhaal plays supportive sibling for his nominated sister Maggie, but his dapper red carpet look — a well-fitting classic Burberry suit — actually outshines her style. We love color on the red carpet, but the fit of her Dries Van Noten gown was all wrong.

TINA FEY
Tina Fey came to the Oscars as a presenter (and also to support her ‘30 Rock’ costar, host Alec Baldwin), but she ended up getting a lot of unexpected praise for her dress. After a rocky awards season, fashion wise, Fey is radiant in a sparkly black Michael Kors gown.

CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER, HELEN MIRREN
The Oscars red carpet was a little hit or miss this year, but we can always count on Helen Mirren to class up any party. Wearing a stunning lavender crystal-studded Badgley Mischka gown and Chopard jewels, she’s on top of our favorites list once again.

Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey’s Oscars dress makes our jaws drop — and not in the way you’d expect. Upgrading from her usual cleavage-centric gowns, Mimi goes classy in a blue slit-up-to-there Valentino gown (with a built-in bodysuit, just in case) and plenty of jewels.

tom ford
Designer-turned-filmmaker Tom Ford did not disappoint on the red carpet, supporting his film ‘A Simple Man’ while also promoting his own Tom Ford line of impeccably fitting suits and tuxes. A sweet white flower in his lapel is all the accessorizing a man needs.

Nicole Richie
Nicole Richie is known for her bohemian style and love of all things vintage, but this chevron-striped sequin Reem Acra gown gives an extra shot of glamour to a classic silhouette. With a simple, sleek updo, the dress’ shades of blue and silver are the star.

DEMI MOORE
Pale peach is the hardest color to pull off on the red carpet; on most women, it comes off looking flesh-tone. Demi Moore doesn’t have that problem in this ruffled and tiered Atelier Versace strapless silk organza gown.

LAURA LOUIE, WOODY HARRELSON
Hemp-loving environmentalist Woody Harrelson — nominated for his supporting role in ‘The Messenger’ — proves that eco-fashion doesn’t have to look earthy and blah. His custom-made Burberry suit and dress shirt were made entirely out of hemp.

RACHEL MCADAMS
Rachel McAdams‘ red carpet look goes over swimmingly with style critics. The Elie Saab Haute Couture gown is gorgeous, especially with her simple hair, makeup and jewels, but it’s the watercolor effect of the printed silk organza that makes this a work of art from any angle.
